Uran birthdays are community-led
and the host has to come into that, not impose on it.
The Agri-Koli community here runs its celebrations with traditions that go back generations, and a city-format script does not work.
Uran is older than most of Navi Mumbai and has its own way of doing family events. The Agri-Koli community here runs birthdays with the elders, the aukshan, and the traditional sequences at the centre, not as add-ons. Most of the parties happen in community halls in the town or, for the newer families, hotel banquets on the JNPT side. Divya Shah builds the script around the family’s traditions rather than fitting them into a city-style running order.
The Atal Setu sea link has cut the drive from the Mumbai side significantly, and Uran is now an easy travel for an evening party. Divya hosts the whole evening in Marathi if that is what the family wants, and she sits with the elders beforehand to understand which traditions matter and where they should sit in the script.

Two birthday parties
Divya has hosted in Uran
A grandmother’s 75th with the women of the family doing the full aukshan.
The grandmother was the eldest in her family and the daughters, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters had planned the aukshan together. The hall was full with the extended family from across the taluka.
“Divya ran the script in Marathi and gave each branch of the family their own line before the aukshan started.”
The grandmother had been quiet through most of the evening but spoke on the mic at the end. She told the family it was the first time she had felt seen at her own birthday.
A first birthday where the city cousins and the village cousins met for the first time.
The host’s wife was from Pune and her family had come down to Uran for the first time. The two sides of the family had not really met before.
“She mixed the two groups by giving each family a section of the running order rather than letting them sit on opposite sides of the hall.”
The grandmothers from both sides ended up sitting together through the cake moment. The host said it was the only time the two families had felt like one room.
What she brings to
your family birthday party
A few things that tend to matter most at these events.
Hosts in Marathi, on the family’s terms
Uran families are often Marathi-first and rooted in the Agri-Koli community. Divya hosts the full evening in Marathi when the family wants it that way.
Builds traditions into the running order
The aukshan and the elders’ sequences get their proper place in the script, not a slot squeezed in at the end. Divya sits with the family to set the order beforehand.
A fresh script every time
Every birthday script gets written from scratch after a sit-down with the family. Nothing is reused from a previous event.

Questions Uran families ask first
Straight answers to the things people actually ask.
No. Divya travels to Uran regularly. The Atal Setu sea link has made the drive from the Mumbai side much shorter, and the road from Panvel is straightforward. There is no extra travel charge for an Uran address.
Yes. A lot of Uran families are from the Agri-Koli community and prefer the whole evening in Marathi. Divya hosts comfortably in Marathi and understands how the traditional sequences are run, including the aukshan and the elders’ blessings.
Most Uran birthdays happen in community halls, the smaller banquet halls in Uran town, or hotel banquets on the JNPT side. Divya has hosted at several of these and is happy to advise the family if they are still choosing a venue.
Yes. Divya writes the running order around the family’s actual community rather than imposing a city-style format. The script can include traditional sequences, family elders speaking, and Marathi throughout if that is what the family wants.
Eight to twelve weeks ahead is usually enough. For wedding-season dates when the community halls share with other functions, three to four months ahead is safer.
